The national services offered by EDINA during 2008/2009 were funded from several sources. The majority were funded by JISC, with funding also provided by ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council), the University of Edinburgh, and by subscription directly from UK HE and FE institutions and other organisations. A list of subscribing institutions is shown in Appendix 3.
All online services were made available free, at the point of use, for academic purposes by staff and students at licensed institutions. Some services, for example NewsFilm Online, Jorum and UKBORDERS, require no fee, while for others an annual institutional subscription is required. The latter is sometimes collected by EDINA in order to cover the costs of service delivery, as has been the case for Land Life Leisure; for most services listed above, JISC, or ESRC, meets that cost and collects any subscription income. Examples include: Education Image Gallery and the Digimap Collections. In all instances, the University of Edinburgh maintains the necessary IT infrastructure to enable cost-effective delivery of service.
