This page has two options for delivering agricultural census data:
Both options follow a 7 step procedure.
From this page select a single country from England, Scotland, or Wales, or England & Wales collectively, or Great Britain as a whole.
Note: Available data will vary across territory and across time.
Click Continue
Return to TopSelect the year for which you would like Agricultural Census data. Data for 'England' and 'Wales' is only available separately for the years 1999 and after. Before that it is available together as 'England & Wales'. Due to variations in censuses across territory and across time more items are available in single country format than for Great Britain as a whole.
Click Continue
Select the census items for which you would like data and add them to the Census Items Selected list using the Add Item(s)+ button.
Note that you can only visualise one census item at a time.
To add more than one item at a time for data download, hold the control key while selecting. All items or all items within each census group can also be added. The items available vary from country to country and year to year.
Click Continue
Select the grid size for the data you want. Grid sizes available:

Select the area of interest by using the Map Controls such as: Select Mode which allows you to select a small area quickly by using a drag box (required JavaScript enabled); Pan Mode. This default control centres and zooms into an area around the point of the map which has been clicked; Pan Controls which allows panning within the boundaries of the country selected; Zoom Controls. Zoom in to select a smaller area, zoom out if a larger area is required.
Alternatively enter the British National Grid Easting and Northing co-ordinates of the area of interest and click on Update.
For an alternative context map click on the Show Land Use button to view the land use capabilities of the area chosen.
Click Continue
Whether you are downloading or visualising the Agricultural Census grid square data this is a summary of the parameters chosen. Click Back to review or change selection(s).
If you are downloading data click on the Download button to download winzipped ASCII delimited Comma Separated Values.
If you are mapping a census item click on the Visualise button to produce the distribution map of the selected item.
After clicking on the Download button the following message will appear:
It may take sometime to complete the data requested. Please be patient
It will take a few moments for the data to compile. Once the data is ready to download to your computer click on the Data Download link.
After clicking on the Visualise button a context map window will appear beside a distribution map of the area of interest for the census item/year/grid size chosen. To change the distribution bandings of the map click on the Change Bandings button.
When comparing a census item with the same item for another census year or two census items with the same units of analysis please note that, in order to compare 'like-with-like', the distribution bandings should be the same.
Click on the Output Image button for a distribution map of the census item chosen which can be downloaded as a GIF image by right clicking the mouse and saving the file to your local computer.
Note:When mapping a census item near to the border between England and Scotland (or England and Wales post-1999)that the distribution map will only appear for the grid squares within the chosen country. There will be no representation within the country not chosen. Click here for an example.
Alternatively click on the Print Image button to print off a hardcopy distribution map. By clicking on the Data Download button the corresponding data for the mapped census item can be downloaded to your local computer (see Step 7 for Data download).
