The brief was to design a Belvédère [Italian from bel 'beautiful' + vedere 'see'. Source: English Oxford Dictionary] in the vicinity of cascade bridge at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, as a panoramic viewpoint which responds to the genius loci [Latin from ‘genius of the place’, the presiding deity or spirit; English Oxford Dictionary].
To create a sheltered space that is both a stopping off point on the journey route through YSP, and for the belvedere to be a piece of sculpture in its own right. The belvedere must create a vantage of the panorama and should integrate contextually with the site.
Obtaining an electronic OS map is one of the initial critical stages which facilitates the recording of a measured and intuitive site analysis - imperative to any successful design. Following the sketch and ultimately the final design stages, contour information in conjunction with the OS map can be translated into a three-dimensional model to illustrate the proposal in its context.
