Marine Digimap

General

Following an agreement made between the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and SeaZone Solutions Ltd, EDINA has developed a subscription service which delivers marine maps and data to Higher and Further Education institutions.

Marine Digimap is part of the Digimap Collection of on-line mapping and data delivery facilities. Users are able to view maps through their web browser, save them for printing and download the marine and coastal data for use in geographical information systems.

Marine Digimap, available since January 2008, is free at the point of use for staff and students at subscribing higher and further education institutions and research councils (special conditions apply). Details of how to access the service can be found here.

There are extensive help pages detailing how to use every aspect of the service and the data in your own GIS or CAD software:

Data

Marine Digimap contains scanned and georeferenced marine maps at scales ranging from 1:3,500,000 to 1:2,500 available for making maps online or for download. There is also vector data containing a huge range of themes covering all aspects of marine spatial information. For a full list and detailed description see the Products Available page.

If you want to know what you can and can't do with the maps and data from Digimap please read the Copyright Terms and Conditions. There is a set of Licence FAQs if you need more clarification about what you intend to do with the maps or data.

Standard tasks

Standard tasks that Marine Digimap allows you to perform are:

  • selecting your area of interest in the UK coastal waters by zooming and panning
  • viewing charts at one of six pre-defined scales:

    • Ocean - small scale ( 1:3,500,000 to 1:750,000)
    • Sea - small scale ( 1:750,000 to 1:300,000)
    • General - small to mid scale (1:200,000 to 1:100,000)
    • Coastal - mid scale ( 1:100,000 to 1:50,000)
    • Approaches - mid to large scale ( 1:50,000 to 1:15,000)
    • Harbour - large scale ( 1:25,000 to 1:2,500)

  • viewing Hydrospatial marine maps at one of thirteen pre-defined scales, from around 1:5,000,000 down to 1:2,500
  • amnnotate the marine maps with symbols, lines, polygons and labels
  • use a location map to see where you are and the extent of the coverage of each scale band

Advanced tasks

In addition to the standard tasks listed above, Marine Digimap allows you to carry out a range of related, advanced tasks.

Download

Charted Raster Download and Hydrospatial Download allow those with more specialist requirements to download map data for use in GIS software on their own desktop. They allow:

  • Charted Raster data available as georeferenced TIF files
  • Hydrospatial data available in Shapefile and MIF/MID formats for use in a GIS
  • data selected using Lat / Long coordinates, Admiralty Chart number, place name or from a map
