Further information on the Lexicon of Named Rock Units is available to registered users within the Digimap service.
The Rock Lexicons is a data table designed to hold information about all rock units of member level or higher that are used, or have been used, on BGS maps and in BGS publications. In Geology Digimap it is used to provide details when users click on different rock units on the geological maps. There is also the facility to download the complete lexicon as an excel file.
Full Lexicon entries include details of:
All entries also carry a code describing the level of information held. These include fully defined Formal and Informal [F and I] entries and Partial [P] entries that lack some elements of a full definition. Code Pending [CP] entries cover units that are not yet defined, and Code Only [C] entries refer to units, unsuitable for definition, that require a unique computer code for use in digital operations. Entries inherited from BGS.Dic_Strat, still awaiting improvement or confirmation of their obsolescence, are coded as DS.
