SeaZone Charted Raster

Introduction

SeaZone Charted Raster is based on scanned and geocoded images of the well known Admiralty Chart series and is available for immediate use in Geographic Information Systems, without the need for additional software, add-ons or plug-ins.

SeaZone Charted Raster data provides ideal backdrop mapping for a variety of uses. The data can be combined with your own datasets to make the display and dissemination of information simple and effective. Further information on Charted Raster data and how to use it is available to registered users within the service.

Content and Scale

The data has been split into 5 usage bands that are based around what the chart was designed to be used for. These bands also allow the data to be grouped loosely by scale. The 5 bands are as follows:

  • Overview - small scale ( 1:3,500,000 1:300,000)
  • General - small to mid scale (1:200,000 to 1:100,000)
  • Coastal - mid scale ( 1:100,000 to 1:50,000)
  • Approaches - mid to large scale ( 1:50,000 to 1:15,000)
  • Harbour - large scale ( 1:25,000 to 1:2,500)

Data Format

Charted Raster files are supplied as Geo-referenced GeoTIFFs with LZW compression. The files can therefore be viewed in most graphics software, imported directly into documents and will display in their correct location in GIS software.

Coordinate System

Each Charted Raster has its own unique projection based on either Mercator or Transverse Mercator, but referenced to the Horizontal WGS84 Datum.
