Geology Roam Quick Reference Guide

What is Geology Roam?

Geology Roam is an online mapping facility which is part of the Geology Digimap Collection. It provides fixed scale map views of a range of British Geological Survey (BGS) data on Ordnance Survey backdrop maps.

The EDINA Geology Digimap collection also provides a download service to obtain the BGS data for use in GIS software packages.

Access

Geology Roam is available to all users at institutions that subscribe to Geology Digimap. Login at edina.ac.uk/digimap/ and select the Geology Digimap Collection.

System Requirements

Web Browser:

Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view PDF maps generated for printing.

Using Geology Roam

To start, click the Geology Roam icon on the Geology Digimap homepage. You can view a map either by searching for a specific location or using the navigation tools to zoom and reposition the map.

Map content

You can control the content of several map views. Click on Map Content Control (Fig. 1) in the left hand panel. This enables you to display only the map features you require, e.g. just the bedrock.

Map Opacity

Above the map there is a slider which allows you to make the geological map more or less opaque or transparent, depending on how important it is to see the background mapping (Fig. 2).

Feature Information

By using the Feature Information tool you can click on the map to see what the geology is at that point. Click the "i" icon above the map to turn this feature on and off.

Details of the rocks from the Lexicon of Named Rock Units are displayed in a pop-up-box when you select a point on the map.

Geological Photos

View photos of geological features highlighted on the map by clicking the camera icon above the map (Fig. 3).

There are over 3000 images of classic locations, interesting rock faces, erosional features and many other scenes.

Available data

Geology Roam has 12 different pre-defined views consisting of BGS geology data and the appropriate scale background Ordnance Survey map.

Comprehensive help and support about the service and the maps are available from the help pages and the EDINA helpdesk (edina@ed.ac.uk). Hints & Tips can be found in the right-hand panel of Geology Roam.

Each subscribing institution has a Digimap site representative, and may also have specialists to assist with computing and map data issues. Within Digimap you will have access to web pages explaining your institutions arrangements for Digimap, and to your institution's Digimap email support, if available. Your site representative (see edina.ac.uk/digimap/list.shtml) will be able to advise.

Terms of Use

The data available through Digimap is the property of the British Geological Survey, and is protected by copyright. The licence allows you to use maps and data from Digimap in academic research and teaching. Restrictions on what you can do with the maps and data are detailed on the Digimap website. It is your responsibility to ensure that you do not breach these terms; appropriate action may be taken if you do.
