Providing Local Support for Digimap

Each subscribing institution is encouraged to provide Local Information pages which give details for users about local aspects of the use of Digimap. These aspects will probably include:

  • browser availability
  • location of public access machines
  • availability and charging policy for printers
  • data storage availability
  • supported software for use with downloaded data

The use of these Local Information pages is discussed in the session on Getting Support in Module 2 "Being a Digimap Site Representative" in the Digimap Training Courses. EDINA provide templates for such pages in order to assist in the process of their preparation.

You can view each template by clicking on the relevant link below:

The templates use the Digimap Title Bar and Background images, which you can view by clicking on the links here:

To download the templates and images for local use, site representatives should:

  • Save each template locally by right clicking on each link above, selecting Save Link As ... (Netscape/Mozilla) or Save Target As ... (Internet Explorer), and choosing an appropriate folder and file name. Be sure you choose to save as "source" or "HTML" not as "text".
  • Save each image locally by right clicking on each link above, selecting Save Link As ... (Netscape/Mozilla) or Save Target As ... (Internet Explorer), and choosing an appropriate folder and file name.
  • complete the relevant details for their institution on the locally saved version of the templates
  • load the resulting pages onto a Web server within their institution
  • inform EDINA of the URL for these local information pages, using the form Local Support Notification (EDS 4)

The local home page template contains more extensive information on how to adjust the templates to show your university's details. The templates are designed to be edited with little or no experience of creating web-pages, however they will need to be integrated into the university's own web site. This is normally the responsibility of a web editor and so the pages will need to be passed to them for hosting on your local site. Once the pages are available from your university's web site, notify EDINA using the EDS 4 form, and we will connect the link on the Digimap pages to your site.

Users from that institution will then see these local information pages when they access the "Local Information" link within the Digimap service. If an institution does not provide a URL for these pages, then users will see a message indicating that local information is not available.
