All things GEO
This is a summary of the main points discussed (more information on topics can be found in the accompanying PowerPoint presentation)
Pricing policy for new Digimap datasets
(Geological, Hydrographical and Historic Maps)
- Pricing policy for new datasets (a discount for each extra dataset, i.e. go for a package price that includes all).
- It would be better if sitereps/institutions were given a whole package price, rather than a price for 1 dataset, as the money would need to come from the associated department, rather than institution, e.g. a price for the geological data would have to be funded by the Geology department.
- Most institutions are centrally funded, or funds come through the library.
- Funders might be put off if the Digimap price double because of the new services added on.
- One of the Universities represented would be happy to pay a single price for the geological stuff as they receive many requests for Geological Data.
- Perhaps EDINA should assess what type of people would be using this new data, e.g. environmental engineers (direct promotional materials their way)
- CONSENSUS: Historical and Geological maps will be very useful.
Requests for other datasets in Digimap
- Northern Ireland and Ireland equivalent of the LandRanger series.
- Soils
- Landcover of Scotland (2000) owned by the Scottish Executive.
- DEM
- Hydrology
- (No real demand for Aerial Photography)
MasterMap
- It will probably take 2 years to rollout MasterMap.
- People are keen to lobby Pat Crocker (JISC collections team manger) about the availability of MasterMap data.
Historic Mapping
- Downloadable .tiff files and .wrl files
- Could there be a link to the memoirs that accompany sheets for Historic mapping (something in GetRef?)
Geological Mapping
- .shp files downloadable and a web view
Hydrographical Mapping
- Some type of UK view, readable by ESRI software
Global Datasets
- JPL Landsat viewer - users wouldn't be able to download data from EDINA, but would be able to download it from the sources.
e-MapScholar
- e-MapScholar modules could be created for staff to get up to speed on new Digimap products
