First stop the library
Kate searches her local library system using the keywords "Queen Elizabeth I". Book titles that are found include:
- Elizabeth I, Alison Plowden, 1971
- Elizabeth I and the Unity of England, Joel Hurstfield, 1960
She uses the library search system (OPAC) at her library, using the same keywords as before. Another library system returns the following book titles:
- Elizabeth I, David Starkey, 2001
- Tudor England, John Guy, 1990
Remember that different libraries can contain different books. It can be worthwhile visiting other local libraries, as well as your library; they may not be linked by an OPAC system
Your library may have subject specialist librarians, usually expert in a particular field (for example, history). Ask a member of staff at your library about this, he or she may be able to show you the quickest way to find the most relevant information in your subject.
Further work
Think about a recent report that you were asked to complete. Did you only use books from your local library? Next time you are in your library see if it is possible to search other library catalogues. If it is possible, try to search them. Would this have given you a wider range of books to refer to?
