Cross-searching benefits

Cross-searching will benefit you if you are a novice user. When searching on an unfamiliar topic it retrieves many terms, suggesting possible terms and subject databases that may be relevant to you. Not all of the terms retrieved will be appropriate, but it can swiftly provide you with an idea of those terms or databases that may be more appropriate for the resources you are trying to locate.

A cross-search includes author, title, subject keyword and abstract fields as these are common to most of the individual databases. By limiting the search to these fields, cross-searching is most effective in the initial stages of your search. The results will have a broad focus, helping to identify the most relevant databases.
