UKBORDERS, one of EDINA’s longest running services, has been successful in securing Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funding for the next five years to continue to deliver the geography products associated with the UK 10-year population census. The boundary data service, as part of the ESRC suite of census support units, will be streamlined into the new UK Data Service Census Support Service (UKDS CSS). This means that over the coming months the branding for UKBORDERS will change to provide a more integrated and consistent view of census resources. The service will, of course, continue to provide the same suite of services and functionality with which users are familiar. Associated longer-term changes will ultimately make it easier to discover, learn about, and use the full range of census resources (boundary data, aggregate statistics, interaction data, and anonymised records). Meanwhile, the new 2011 census outputs are gradually being released by the national census agencies, and the UKDS CSS is already making these resources available to the community; most recently UKBORDERS has released the English and Welsh 2011 small area Output Areas through its EasyDownload service. The Northern Irish and Scottish equivalents will follow once they are published by the responsible statistical agencies. More information about the UKDS and its Census Support Service
