European Spatial Data Infrastructure with a Best Practice Network
ESDIN
September 2008 - March 2011
ESDIN was established by the European Commission to develop a Best Practice Network and to evaluate the theory of integrating national Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDIs).
ESDIN is under the leadership of EuroGeographics, which represents 52 national mapping and cadastral agencies from 43 countries across Europe.
ESDIN’s objective is to assist with the construction of a European Spatial Data Infrastructure (ESDI), in the context of the Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community (INSPIRE). Such an ESDI would support policy-making in areas, such as those that concern the protection of the environment. The long-term goal is to provide an e-commerce portal for access to all member-state geospatial data, delivered through the ESDIN engine. This will provide services to overlay, render and match different datasets in a common way to the level of detail and accuracy required.
The project will look to construct a bridge between the concept and practical implementation of INSPIRE. This will be achieved by improving aggregated information for a number of INSPIRE data themes, such as oceanographic geographical features and sea regions, and providing interoperability services, as well as supporting the ongoing development and testing of INSPIRE implementing rules, a set of rules for the coherent implementation of the INSPIRE, and data specifications.
