Supporting Personalisation across the JISC Information Environment (IE)

Title

Supporting Personalisation across the JISC Information Environment (IE)

Duration

February 2009 - ongoing

Summary

Following on from their Developing Personalisation for the Information Environment (DPIE), where the final reports from the DPIE1 and DPIE2 projects highlighted tagging and personalised search and recommendation engines as areas for further work, JISC are funding an investigation by EDINA of facilities to set off services delivered into the JISC IE in ways that information and functionality could be enjoyed by other services delivered into the JISC IE.

The project has two work areas:

  • Location-based searching for JISC IE services
  • A shared middleware service for the management and use of service-content references

Project Deliverables

The project will address the above through the design and build of two rapid demonstrators.

Location-based searching for JISC IE services: will build a proof of concept demonstrator that takes location information on resources (and services) and uses these to sort and rank the results of searches on the basis of geographic proximity to a user-defined location.

Shared middleware service of service-content references: will investigate and demonstrate a reference linking knowledge-base, with a focus on multimedia resources, that could act as middleware for personalisation actions by services into the JISC IE.
