Grade Geospatial Repository

Description

The focus of this work package is on the storage, management and access to /data derived from licensed data/ within repositories. Using a 'learn-by-doing' philosophy, the intention is to investigate issues within the sandbox afforded by scoping the operation of a media repository. To this end, a repository demonstrator will be set up to repurpose geospatial data derived from licensed content already available via Digimap Ordnance Survey and UKBORDERS services. Access to the licensed information within these services is restricted either by subscription and/or registration. There is thus a controlled environment for conducting the objectives of this work package. By leveraging partner institutions and the existing large user base we have an ideal practical test bed within which to explore geospatial data use and reuse as well as being able to exploit existing communication channels in order to encourage stakeholder participation. A formal media-centric demonstrator repository can thus be readily and relatively easily established with which to experiment, establish use cases scenarios and evaluate issues relating to: functionality and content packaging; digital rights/IPR; quality control processes; the types of support depositors and those extracting data will require; how repository activity and practices may be embedded within research and learning processes; and sustainability and business models.
