Case Study:
Using Digital maps in Architectural Modelling

Details of the case study

Learning outcomes:

Use Digimap Carto to find the area of study
Select via Carto the data required
Having made the map of the site needed, download it
Convert the data file into a format useable in AutoCAD
Build a 3D model from the map
Gain knowledge of integrating different software packages and data sources

Other data sources used: Image banks are used to find illustrative detail to help create an accurate 3D model. (We use Scottish Cultural Resources Archive Network, http://www.scran.ac.uk [opens in a new window] because of our context, other locations will have equivalent resources.)

Internet browser

Viewers/plugins required: Access to Digimap Carto with an Internet browser requires some Java plugins. With newer browsers this is automatic.

Other requirements:

Knowledge of Carto is not assumed, but staff need to be able to help
Students must be registered to use Carto
Digital cameras and scanners are needed to complete the analysis

Other materials: There are a number of hand-outs available under 'description' either on paper or as .pdf files downloadable from the College Intranet. Distance learners are e-mailed the .pdf files.

Support: I attended Digimap training, but colleagues have used Carto with very little training. The institution's Athens administrators need to register students, who then apply for individual accounts. Class registration could be used. No further technical help was required.

Quality Assurance: We use student feedback surveys and visits from the University and College Quality Assurance Offices to monitor quality.
We are regularly inspected by our Professional Bodies - Royal Institute of British Architects, (RIBA) and the Architects' Registration Board, who examine the programmes we teach and the quality of our methods, and materials.
