Case Study: Pedagogy/context Subject area: Built Environment, Architecture LTSN Subject Centre: Centre for Education in the Built Environment http://cebe.cf.ac.uk/ [opens in a new window] Applicability to other subject areas: Site Specific Art, all Built Environment disciplines (i.e. not just Architecture) Ease of transferability of ideas to other subject areas: Anyone using a 3D-modelling package could use this technique, if not the exact method. Level: Intermediate and up to Post-graduate Participants: 120 students, 3 members of staff Independent study/group work: The materials have been used for teaching classes at second year degree course level, and also for self-study in higher years, and evening class students. Study mode:
Pedagogical approach: The materials support resource-based learning, and through the associated project, students practice techniques at their own pace, so that experiential learning also occurs. Teaching methods: Tutorial, followed by workshops. Some of the materials have also been used for distance learners. Typical learning time: Keen students would take up to two hours to work through the first exercise of learning the 3D modelling. Students whose first language is not English might take longer, or need further help from a tutor. Accessing the Digimap web-site to get the site needed takes a little time, and the making of the model might take 6-8 hours, depending on how large the site is, and the complexity required. Prior knowledge required: The ability to use a mouse is essential. Experience using a simple graphics programme helps. Assessment: The final product, a print out of the model made, is assessed. Prior experience: Some of the material has been used and tested over about five years. The Digital mapping teaching materials have been used and revised over the last two years. |
