Summary

PEPRS 2 builds upon the work of PEPRS 1 which ran from August 2008 – July 2010. The key aim of PEPRS 1 was to create a working demonstrator which would establish the form of a registry service for preservation information about e-journals and which would be based on known user requirements. To this end good working relationships were established with the five named preservation agencies CLOCKSS, LOCKSS, e-Depot at Koninklijke Bibliotheek, Portico and the British Library. In addition, from interviews with agency staff and librarians, combined with the user requirements identified in the literature, a set of user requirements was drawn up and was used for the design of the demonstrator system.

All the agencies, except the British Library, provided PEPRS with real data and this was used in the demonstrator along with the authoritative data supplied by EDINA’s partner, the ISSN International Centre. The ISSN IC supplied the ISSN Register which provides details of all journals which have been assigned an ISSN. This authoritative data is used to ensure incoming data matches correctly.

The Project was externally evaluated in February 2010 and the evaluators recommended to the JISC that funding for a Phase 2 to take the project into service should be awarded. All the recommendations made by the evaluators have been incorporated into the Phase 2 proposal which was submitted to the JISC in May 2010. Formal approval, based on the proposal, was given for PEPRS Phase 2 in July 2010.

The main aims of PEPRS 2 are as follows:

• To establish a public beta service based on the functionality of the Phase 1 demonstrator and make it available early in 2011
• To develop a full service based on the operational experience of the beta service for launch in late 2011
• To carry out a further series of user interviews, including with users from overseas, and develop additional functionality for the service
• To carry out testing of the beta service to ensure that the full service is based on a well tested platform
• To identify and implement a governance structure
• To prepare a detailed business plan for the future operation of the service
