TIES

The TIES Project (Technologies for Information Environment Security) was funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee of the higher and further education funding councils, as part of its Authentication and Authorisation programme designed to give the UK education community experience of the emerging technologies in the authentication and authorisation area, based on open vendor-independent standards.

Project Aim

To test the practicality of deploying X.509 digital certificate technology as a central security infrastructure element of the JISC Information Environment.

Project Objectives

  • To demonstrate the feasibility of issuing digital certificates across a large institution
  • To implement certificate verification software at EDINA, a major Data Service Provider (DSP)
  • To consider solutions to assist and encourage the deployment of digital certificates across the wider HE/FE sector

The project was completed in October 2003.
