Back to Statistical Accounts of Scotland Support
The two Statistical Accounts of Scotland, covering the 1790s and the 1830s, are among the best contemporary reports of life during the agricultural and industrial revolutions in Europe. Based largely on information supplied by parish church ministers, the Old (first) Statistical Account and the New (second) Statistical Account provide a rich record of a wide variety of topics.
Go to Statistical Accounts of Scotland and click on login. Depending on your local setup, you may be asked for a username and password. If your username or password is not recognised, follow the alternative login procedures link.
The service is normally available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Any planned service breaks will be announced via the EDINA web site.

Statistical Accounts of Scotland has five navigational areas:
The navigation bar at the top of the screen allows you to move between any of the main areas.

screen image of Quick Search screen:
The Quick search allows searching for Parish, County or the occurrence of a word in the transcribed text (all text). The quick links on the home page will take you to the other options available. These options also appear on the menu bar within the service at the top of the interface on other pages.
screen image of County Map screen:
The interactive County map allows selection of a County. As the mouse cursor moves over the map the name of the County will be displayed. When you click on a County all the Parishes within that County and the County reports are displayed within the Find parishes and counties page.

The Find Parish and County (shire) reports page provides three different ways to find a report. These detailed reports by ministers of the Kirk from 938 Parishes make up the bulk of the Statistical Accounts with additional County level reports.
Browse the text of the original volumes of the Statistical Accounts, arranged in the order in which the Parish and County reports were published. The Table of Contents and the General Index included have been compiled from those in the published volumes.
The Search section allows you to look for occurrences of words or terms in the complete text of either or both Accounts.
screen image of Search Texts screen:
The default search will look for words in both Accounts and all Counties and Parishes, or select one or both of the Accounts by checking one of the buttons. It is possible to search for your words or phrase using the following options in the pull down menu: All of the words, Any of the words or as a phrase. After a search the results, if there are any matching the enquiry, are displayed within context below the search boxes. If there are more than ten matches, the first batch of ten is displayed with a forward symbol (>) at the top and the bottom of the results to view the next ten results, and so on.
Use this extra feature to search for a specific page in any volume of either Account. Select an Account, then enter the Volume number (optional) and the page number you are looking for. Click the Submit button to run the search. A link to the image of that page will appear at the bottom of the page finder section.
screen image of Page Finder:
The page view displays the scanned pages with the option of viewing the transcribed text of the Statistical Accounts alongside the image. The Account, volume, page, Parish and County name form the title of the page.

To the left of the page there is a list of all the Counties and Parishes contained in both accounts. The list can be hidden by clicking on the hide accounts button and made to reappear by clicking on the show accounts button.
screen image of sidebar:
Note when the two pages are viewed sided by side the list will be hidden by default. Clicking on the small cross beside the name of a County will give a list of Parishes within that County, you can go straight to the Parish report without having to run a search by clicking on the Parish name.

Online help is available at all times. To return from Help to the previous area, follow the relevant link in the navigation bar at the top.
It is good practice to use the Exit link when you have finished the session. This will take you to a logoff page where you click the Logoff link. You will exit from your Education Image Gallery session. From here you may either continue to use other Athens authenticated services or logout of Athens altogether. You will be automatically logged out after a period of non-use of the interface.
