UKBORDERS

Q. What is UKBORDERS?

A. UKBORDERS provides digitised boundary datasets of the UK, available in many Geographic Information System (GIS) formats, such as MapInfo MIF/MID, ArcView Shape, Arc/Info Export and several others. These datasets may be downloaded by teaching staff, students and researchers in the UK Higher and Further Education community and used in their work. Further information on the datasets in the service and how they can be downloaded can be found on the service description page: http://edina.ac.uk/ukborders/description/

Q. How can I gain access to UKBORDERS?

A. Anyone with federation access from a UK higher or further education institution may register for and use UKBORDERS.

The Census Registration Service (CRS) at the University of Essex manages registrations to all of the census resources available through the ESRC Census Programme, UKBORDERS included. New users should register online through the ESRC Census Programme web site to access UKBORDERS. This should be a brief one-off procedure. Once registration with the ESRC Census Programme is confirmed you may login to UKBORDERS. Registering with the ESRC Census Programme will also provide users with the ability to access all the Census Data Support Units without having to login to each separately. Further information on registering can be found on the ESRC Census Programme website.

Queries regarding registration for the UKBORDERS service should be emailed to the ESRC Census Programme help desk at help@census.ac.uk.

Q. I am not able to register with the ESRC Census Programme. Can I still obtain access to a dataset distributed through the UKBORDERS service?

A. Unfortunately we are only funded to provide datasets to users who are registered with the ESRC Census Programme. You can find out the name of the organisation that supplied a dataset provided through UKBORDERS by examining online metadata records held by the ESRC Census Programme. To view these metadata records go to the ESRC Census Programme Portal at http://census.ac.uk, and use the search facility located at top right to search for and view metadata records associated with UKBORDERS datasets. If you have problems using the search facility at the ESRC Census Programme Portal you should contact the Census Programme help desk directly via help@census.ac.uk.
